The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is a not-for-profit professional organization representing nearly 45,000 geoscientists across 28 European national associations. The private company is based in Brussels, Belgium. EFG promotes high standards, ethical practice, and professional recognition in geology through initiatives such as the EurGeol title and the Medal of Merit award. It connects geoscience professionals, policymakers, industry, and academia to advance geoscience’s societal role in environmental protection, sustainable resource management, natural hazard mitigation, and energy transition. EFG publishes the peer-reviewed, open-access European Geologist Journal, offers newsletters, webinars, and organizes major events like Geoscience Week and the UNECE Resource Management Week. The organization operates ten panels of experts providing independent advice on topics including CO2 storage, geothermal energy, minerals, natural hazards, and soil protection, influencing EU policy and decision-making. EFG contributes to European policy initiatives such as the Green Deal, Critical Raw Materials Act, and Circular Economy Action Plan by engaging in consultations, producing position papers, and fostering dialogue between science and policymakers. Through its research projects and development unit, EFG leads and participates in numerous EU-funded and collaborative projects addressing climate adaptation, sustainable mining, geothermal energy, education, and innovative exploration technologies. It maintains international partnerships with organizations like the International Union of Geological Sciences and the Pan-European Reserves & Resources Reporting Committee, promoting cooperation, innovation, and professionalism. EFG supports career development, training, and public awareness of geosciences’ importance, offering advertising and volunteering opportunities to engage its network.
