American Academy in Berlin GmbH operates as an independent and privately funded non-profit center for advance study in the humanities, public policy, social sciences, and arts. Its aim is to maintain the long-term intellectual, cultural and political ties between the United States and Germany. It offers residential fellowships at its Hans Arnhold Center to American scholars, writers, journalists, policy experts, and artists. It also brings leading Americans to Berlin for visits to facilitate an exchange of views between the people of Germany and the United States. The company was founded by Richard C. Holbrooke in 1994 and is headquartered in Berlin, Germany.
