Barkerville Heritage Trust manages Barkerville Historic Town & Park, a national historic site and the largest living history museum in Canada, located on the traditional territories of the Lhtako Dene Nation and peoples. The non-profit company is based in Bakerville, Canada. Established around Billy Barker’s 1862 gold discovery, Barkerville played a central role in the Cariboo Gold Rush and features over 125 preserved heritage buildings, including the oldest Chee Kung Tong building in Canada, reflecting a rich multicultural history with a significant 19th-century Chinese community. The trust operates under a heritage property license in partnership with the province, which is legally obligated to preserve the site indefinitely. Barkerville Heritage Trust also manages additional historic sites such as the Richfield Courthouse, Blessing’s Grave Site, the Cariboo Wagon Road Northern Terminus Memorial Cairn, and Cottonwood House Historic Site. The site offers educational programs, archival research services, and a large collection of artifacts and photographs, including the largest collection of pre-railway Chinese buildings in Canada. Seasonal programming includes special events and winter activities, and the trust collaborates with Indigenous knowledge keepers to acknowledge Indigenous histories and address colonial legacies. Funding comes from admissions, grants, and donations, with options like annual passes and special local rates available.
