Alexandria Financial Associates (AFA) employs a total return investment approach that combines active and passive management. They select large-cap equities and REITs and complete their portfolios with a combination of actively-managed and passive mutual funds and ETFs in the following asset classes: mid-cap, small-cap, international equity, real estate and fixed-income. They may also use individual bond and preferred stock holdings. AFA employs fundamental analysis in their selection process for both individual equities and bonds. They focus on a company's balance sheet, income statement and management experience. The firm does not utilize technical analysis to time movements in and out of investments. When selecting mutual funds, AFA uses a strict qualitative and quantitative process to identify the best managers in terms of performance, longevity in manager tenure and consistency in investment policy (minimal style drift). AFA maintains strategic asset allocation, which changes as the client enters different phases of their lives or if particular circumstances change. The firm considers the tax impact and transaction costs of portfolio changes but they do not focus exclusively on these factors when making investment decisions. AFA focuses on identifying investments they believe will perform well over the long-term (typically, three years or greater) rather than over shorter periods.
