Astor Asset Management's long/short investment strategy is offered through separately managed accounts that seek positive returns regardless of market direction or conditions. In managing this program, the firm analyzes macro-economic indicators as they relate to the broader equity indexes and positions portfolios according to the long-term economic trend. They use broad market indices as a surrogate for the economy, as well as several actively managed strategies. By analyzing various economic indicators as they relate to equity prices, Astor has created a model that indicates if the market is undervalued or overvalued as it relates to the general economy. When the indicators signal a shift in the broader market trend, the firm attempts to capitalize on the trend by buying or selling equity products that track the S&P 500 and NASDAQ 100. Astor does not intend to engage in frequent trading. They review the economic data on a monthly basis but prefer to hold on to positions until a shift in the fundamentals presents itself and is confirmed. Their management style focuses on the overall markets and the economy rather than individual stocks. It is Astor's belief that a buy-and-hold manager that invests in individual stocks has inherent limitations due to the fact that they must identify and buy undervalued stocks, even if economic conditions do not warrant an appreciating stock market. In addition, Astor believes that the broader market averages present a greater opportunity to more efficiently take advantage of underlying economic conditions.
