Presently, Zafar Mahmood holds the position of Chairman of Pakistan Tobacco Co. Ltd.

In the past Mr. Mahmood was Chairman of Kot Addu Power Co. Ltd., Chairman of Punjab Public Service Commission (Pakistan), Secretary of Government of Pakistan and Chairman for The Pakistan Water & Power Development Authority (a subsidiary of Government of Pakistan) and Secretary at Punjab Education Schools.

He received a graduate degree from The University of Manchester.
