John Robert Arthur Dowd served as a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and a Member of the Liberal Party of Australia from 1975 to 1991.
He also served as the Attorney General of New South Wales from 1988 to 1991.
Dowd was a Jurist in the Supreme Court of New South Wales from 1994 to 2004.
He was the Chairman of The International Commission of Jurists and the Chancellor of Southern Cross University from 1988 to 1991 and 2002 to 2014, respectively.
Dowd was also the President of ActionAid Australia from 2009 to 2014.
He completed his undergraduate degree from The University of Sydney.
