Durrant-Whyte worked as a University Lecturer-Engineering Science at the University of Oxford from 1987 to 1995.
He then worked as a Professor-Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Sydney from 1995 to 2010.
From 2010 to 2014, he served as the Chief Executive Officer & Director at National ICT Australia Ltd.
Durrant-Whyte received his undergraduate degree from the University of London in 1983, his graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985, and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1986.
