Michael Samuel Davern

Mr. Michael S.
Davern, CFA, is a Senior Market Strategist at Nuveen Asset Management LLC.
In this role, he supports sales and marketing activity related to all of the firm’s municipal managed money products: open-end mutual funds, closed-end funds and privately managed accounts.
He serves as one of the company's chief spokesmen on economic issues and investment philosophy, especially related to municipal bond investments and tactical asset allocation.
He brings a unique perspective as a long-time direct participant in the financial markets.
He began working in the financial services industry in 1985.
Prior to join the firm in 2011, Mr. Davern has spent most of his career as a portfolio manager of open- and closed-end municipal bond funds, including state-specific portfolios for Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin, as well as national portfolios.
Previously, he worked at Van Kampen Merritt as a senior credit analyst.
He began his municipal bond career at Fuji Bank.
Mr. Davern earned his undergraduate degree from Illinois Benedictine University and his master’s degree in finance from the University of Illinois.
He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the Chicago Municipal Analysts Society and the Association of Investment Management and Research.
