The firm will raise cash reserves during periods of unusual market risk, but generally seeks to maintain a fully invested posture over a typical market cycle. Securities selected are generally expected to be held to be held for long-term capital gains, with the goal of providing higher after-tax returns.

The non-profit company is based in Ann Arbor, MI. It provides funding for oncology research across a broad range of cancers, facilitates clinical trials, translational medicine initiatives, and physician education through grants, fellowships, training events, and patient advocacy. The foundation offers career development fellowships, early-stage investigator scholarships, mentorship initiatives, travel support programs, committee meeting funds, and specialized funding to enhance participation of Veterans Health Administration medical centers in oncology clinical trials. It organizes bi-annual SWOG group meetings to foster collaboration among oncology professionals and established an annual endowed lectureship on advances in cancer prevention. The foundation partners with SWOG Clinical Trials Partnerships to conduct industry-funded cancer clinical trials complementary to NCI-sponsored research and encourages donations and grant applications to sustain its mission.
