He began his career with U.
S.
Steel in 1969 at Fairfield (Alabama) Works as a management trainee and held in the operating, personnel services and commercial departments.
Mr. Sterling was named Assistant Manager-Equal Employment Opportunity in the Employee Relations Department for United States Steel in 1975.
He held various employee relations positions in Pittsburgh for United States Steel and became Vice President-Labor Relations, Steel and Related Resources for the former U.
S.
Steel Group of USX Corporation in 1984.
In 1986, he became Vice President-Employee Relations for the United States Steel and Senior Vice President-Human Resources in 2003, Senior Vice President-Human Resources & Business Services in 2004.
Mr. Sterling was elected President of Transtar, Inc. from 2000 to 2003.
He serves as Chairman of the United States Steel Foundation, Inc. Mr. Sterling is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Braddock and a Director of the UPMC - McKeesport.
Mr. Sterling serves on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
He is a Member of the Board of Trustees of Robert Morris University and a Director of Maglev, Inc., Pittsburgh.
Mr. Sterling admitted to the Bar in Alabama and Pennsylvania.
He received a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University and a Law degree from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama.
