StanCorp’s retirement plan clients primarily invest in mutual funds, collective trusts and group annuity contracts. Investments are selected and retained based on their long-term adherence to specific performance and portfolio criteria. Portfolios are constructed based on mean return and variance analysis. For endowments and other organizations, the firm primarily invests in mutual funds but may include stocks, bonds and/or ETFs. These investments are used to populate allocations that are expected to produce returns and risk consistent with the client’s long-term objectives and risk tolerance. Mutual funds are selected and retained based on their long-term adherence to specific performance and portfolio criteria. Their fixed income and equity selections are based on fundamental and quantitative analysis.

Harness Investment Management Group (HIMG) seeks to generate absolute returns above inflation through the active management of long-term, investments across a range of asset classes. The firm employs a top-down, global, macroeconomic investment process. HIMG strives to provide a high degree of liquidity, reduced volatility, returns of 3% to 5% above inflation over rolling 3-year periods and a low correlation to traditional market indices. The Harness Absolute Return Fund (HIARX) is a non-diversified mutual fund that seeks to provide returns above inflation of 3% to 5% percent over rolling 3-year periods with moderate levels of volatility. The Fund may invest in fixed-income securities including inflation-protected bonds and domestic, international and emerging market fixed-income securities. Its equity investments include domestic, international and/or emerging market stocks. The Fund may also invest in domestic and international real estate, commodities including energy, agricultural, industrial and precious metals and/or currencies. The Fund may invest in these asset classes directly (except for real estate and commodities) or through derivative instruments. The Fund gains exposure to the real estate asset class through investments in publicly traded REITs and ETFs that hold publicly-traded REITs. The Fund's investments in the commodities asset class includes futures, options on futures, structured notes, ETFs and ETNs that are linked to commodities. The Fund may invest up to 100% of its net assets in ETFs. Allocations to particular asset classes or individual securities within asset classes are limited as follows: (1) Equities - 40% (2) Commodities - 40% (3) Real Estate- 40% and (4) Currencies - 10%. The Fund's position in a single stock may not exceed 4%. Its position in a single REIT may not exceed 4% and an investment in a single commodity may not exceed 10%.
