SSgA FM utilizes several methods of investment analysis across a wide array of investment strategies when formulating investment advice or managing assets. The firm does not rely on one type of investment analysis over another and does not recommend one particular type of security. They seek to utilize the most prudent methods of investment analysis based upon certain characteristics of the investment strategy and the current market conditions, as applicable.

AIG-IJ was a conservative investment manager with a growth-oriented investment approach and a long-term outlook. They were Japanese equity and debt specialists who also invested in global markets, particularly in the US. The firm invested primarily in Japanese large- to mega-cap equity, but had no market cap restriction or sector focus. Global asset allocation was determined by a worldwide committee and was based on the overall economic environment, market risks, regional business cycles, and a global investment view. Domestic investments followed a bottom-up, sector-oriented process. A top-down approach was used for foreign investments. AIG-IJ relied primarily on fundamental research, complemented by quantitative analysis. The firm's analysts quantitatively screened for cash flow and asset valuations over a period of time and sought to identify the large-scale societal, demographic, or economic cycles likely to impact near-term valuations. The parent group provided administrative support as well as shared research to supplement the firm's in-house research capabilities, which included company visits. Fund performances were evaluated against the industry's relevant benchmarks (MSCI in particular).
